See, I've used the Noisebox spelling...

As this is the only Noisebox song that seems to be left out from the tracklisting of the advertised deluxe Asleep in the back package, I've been listening over to the three versions I have.

Noisebox, b-side and a bootleg from the last time it was played live in 2004.

I still get goosebumps listening to this song, maybe its the proggie keyboards.

Noisebox original version is my favourite... for the metallic scraping in the longer intro, ...

No, not a mistake. Out Of Phase Stereo.

It's a process that Beatles fans have been doing for years. Take a stereo track, invert one of the channels, and output in mono. The center drops out, and what remains is usually instrumental, and it's usually a mystery. You usually lose the vocal, either entirely or it gets really buried.

I OOPSed the entirety of The Seldom Seen Kid, just for kicks.

Elbow is an interesting band to OOPS, because they already have an interesting sonic ...

Jay-Z played Baltimore a few nights ago, and reading a review of that, I started thinking.

Has anyone mashed Elbow and Jay-Z?

There are Beatles/Jay-Z mashes (The Grey Album), Radiohead/Jay-Z mashes (Jaydiohead), Oasis/Jay-Z mashes (Ojayzis), and Coldplay/Jay-Z mashes (Viva La Hova).

I find them entertaining. I particularly like the Jaydiohead mixes. "Change Order" and "Roc and Cry" are fantastic pieces of music in their own right.

On several occasions in the past, the girls in the string quartet have entertained early birds at gigs with their glorious renditions of Elbow favourites old and new. It certainly made the uncomfortable wait on the MEN floor much more bearable as we sat there under the control of the Stalinist oppressors aka the MEN security.

I hope these beautiful arrangements have been captured properly in some way for posterity: It would be nice to think that a CD of these performances could be released ...

Dead In The Boot. The B-sides/rarities album that's been mentioned a few times over the years. What should go on it? Okay, yes, ideally a three or four disc box set would be ideal. But what if it were a single, 80 minute CD, much like Oasis' The Masterplan? What do you choose? What do you leave off? Do you pick covers over original band compositions? And how do you sequence it?

I put my thinking cap on. And this is Allyn's Dead in the Boot:

My votes: I think Seldom Seen Kid is a great record. Every track is quality. In time it may be the one I play most often. Right now, Cast of Thousands is my top pick. Switching Off, Not A Job, Ribcage, Fugitive Motel, ...

I read all your comments on the site and it's interesting to see or so it seems Cast would probably be generally peoples least popular album. It surprises me as I think it's signature album ie) very dark, very intense. The third and fourth seem a lot more optimistic in tone. All good stuff though. I think Cast is what Elbow are about.

Since all of their albums (save TSSK) have been issued with different tracks, which versions do you all interpret as the 'official' one...?

I'm in the US, I listen to COT with Whisper Grass and Lay Down Your Cross, but all other versions omit these songs... should the UK version be the 'official' one, since that's where the band is from?

I only consider alternatives ...

My wife recently bought me Leaders Of The Free World and Cast Of Thousands and I've been slowly getting to know them both. Whilst I found LOTFW to be like an embullient and outgoing new friend, COT has been more like an introverted, mysterious loner and consequently, I haven't spent a great deal of time with that album. Was Some Riots played at gig(s) before the CD was released? Because when I heard it I knew I knew it - I was waiting for the "and it's breaking my heart" falsetto. I'd have to got and dig through my old diaries to work out which gigs, but I mean one of the last ones before they went to record TSSK. Dunno if it was the Cohesion thingy at Platt Fields, but sometime around then.

Scattered Black and Whites is definitely a favourite amongst my friends and I... pretty chuffed they're playing again. I've seen Elbow twice and they didn't play it at either - got my fingers crossed for this time!

The lyrics and what give this song its ddep beauty for me, but for sheer Elbow-tastic music it also has the ending. Which has to be one of the greatest album enders there is. Hmm, I smell a new thread there...

Anywho, share the love for this subtle gem.
