"Yoshimi" is a fantastic album - thanks for reminding me!

To my shame I've heard almost nothing else by them apart from "This Here Giraffe", "She Don't Use Jelly" and "Talkin' 'Bout The Smiling Deathporn Immortality Blues" which I heard on a John Peel show in the very early '90s.

You would definitely enjoy Soft Bulletin then, it is considered to be their masterpiece and is often voted best album of the 90s. (Pitchfork gave it a perfect 10! not many bands get that).

Their older stuff is equally fantastic but perhaps less accessible. Unfortunately thier latest album, At war with the mystics is a little poor by their high standards.

Their live show has to be seen to be believed. Amazing. Like a giant6 party.

YESSSS! Love me some Flaming Lips! I have seen 'em live twice and both shows were beyond awesome. And russycarps is 100% on target about their concerts. Their live shows are like the best party you've ever been to, on steroids, multiplied by a bazillion. Very Happy I think they get unfairly knocked/dismissed by a lot of people who may only know them for She Don't Use Jelly. They have soooo many excellent songs and they have one of the most unique and creative approaches to songwriting, recording and live performing of any band out there, for my money.

hooray for you chrissie I couldnt have put it anymore perfectly!

I was gonna link to one of their shows on youtube but it doesnt come even 0.0001% close to what it's like to be there. EVERYONE in the crowd just has the biggest, stupidest grin on their face throughout. Love love LOVE wayne! ......and steven michael and kliph too of course.

And the best thing of all is I'll be seeing them in london in July. WOOOOOOOOOOO!

Yeah, I bought UFOs at the Zoo the second it hit the shelves, just to relive the joy of the Lips live moments, but you just can't, can ya? You have to be there.

And you're going in July? Lucky you -- wish I was seeing them again soon... *jealous*

Last time I checked there were no FL dates; mostly festivals thru the summer, but maybe after fest season is over they'll do some shows of their own. I haven't been on the Flips board for a few years. When I'm online, it's usually MySpace to keep up with bands I like and to find fellow music lovers to chat with.

Flaming Lips fan here too.

My kids are obsessed with "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots". They sing along and act out all the songs. It's very amusing to me.

Outstanding! You are a fine parent, Topaz, and your children are obviously quite gifted. Smile My kid only knows a few songs, but she can identify Wayne's voice and face pretty well, so we're getting there.

Yoshimi is going to be a Broadway musical, BTW...it's already in the works, for anyone who didn't already know. It's being directed by Des McAnuff, who brought the Who's Tommy to Broadway and it will be written by Aaron Sorkin (writer on The West Wing). They announced this about a year ago and I haven't heard anything since... don't know if they're any closer to completing it or not, but if they ever do, I will definitely save up to see that. Very Happy

I think it'll make a great musical. Wonder if there'll be any space bubbles, confetti bombs or laser pointers involved, though...might be weird to hear Lips music in a live setting without all the party atmosphere!
